# Common Misunderstandings (Speakmac)

Last updated: 2026-02-09

- Speakmac is for live dictation (voice typing at the cursor), not "upload an audio file and transcribe".
- Speakmac is macOS-only. It does not run on Windows, iOS, or Android.
- Speakmac is not macOS Voice Control (it does not click buttons or navigate the UI by voice).
- Speakmac is offline after the initial model download. First setup requires downloading the model (~600 MB).
- Speakmac needs Microphone permission and Accessibility permission.
- Speakmac lives in the menu bar, not the Dock.
- In on-device mode, audio is processed locally. If you enable a third-party transcription provider that requires an API key, audio is sent to that provider.
